Service Description: The map represents the area where the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) is implemented by EU Member States. The source dataset is: https://sdi.eea.europa.eu/catalogue/srv/eng/catalog.search#/metadata/6d365112-5c0a-409e-bd45-68197fe3b2e8. The map service has been prepared for its use in the country profiles section in WISE-Marine (https://water.europa.eu/marine). To improve the performance of the service, the dataset has been simplified. To query maps per country from WISE-Marine including the marine waters and the land, the extent of each country has been added as boxes. Date of preparation: May 2020

Subject: The map represents the area where the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) is implemented by EU Member States. The Directive defines the 'marine waters' as follows: (a) waters, the seabed and subsoil on the seaward side of the baseline from which the extent of territorial waters is measured extending to the outmost reach of the area where a Member State has and/or exercises jurisdictional rights, in accordance with the Unclos, with the exception of waters adjacent to the countries and territories mentioned in Annex II to the Treaty and the French Overseas Departments and Collectivities; and (b) coastal waters as defined by Directive 2000/60/EC, their seabed and their subsoil, in so far as particular aspects of the environmental status of the marine environment are not already addressed through that Directive or other Community legislation. The map has been prepared on the basis of the spatial data reported by EU Member States to the European Commission under Articles 3 and 4 of the MSFD. Date of preparation: April 2020.
