Service Description: Protected areas 2018 -based on CDDA v16 / Natura2000 end 2017 /Emerald 2018 without overlapping sites. Statistics on the area of protected sites contain double counting due to overlapping sites. Sites often overlap as parts of the landscape are designated as protected area under different legislation. For some area statistics such as the area of the Natura 2000 network these overlaps are eliminated by means of GIS methods. However for area statistics on protected sites which do not only required the area as such but need to be differentiated by other attributes of the sites such as IUCN category, these overlaps have not been eliminated up to now. Thus the statistics include the double counting of the area. Therefore a new layer "protected areas" was produced based on Natura2000 end 2017 and CDDA version 16 and EMERALD 2018 was produces. The main different to both input-layer: no overlapping sites are existing!
